Tis the season to ask: Am I a good volunteer?
by Tim Homan
Cleveland-There has been a lot of publicity about volunteerism in recent years. George Bush, when he was president, created the Thousand Points of Light Foundation, which sought out volunteers who excel. A good volunteer is truly a point of light and inspiration for nonprofit agencies and the people they serve.
Good is the pivotal adjective. There are okay volunteers, and mediocre volunteers galore, but there are very few good volunteers. What defines good? Good question. I asked the people for whom I volunteer: What makes a good volunteer?
"A good volunteer can rise above their own limitations and work productively as a team member."
These few responses are remarkable because they all speak to the same concept: voluntary action behavior, that is not coerced, and without expectation.
AID S
This truly makes a good volunteer. The AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland has many good volunteers, and we profile one in each issue of our quarterly newsletter Spectrum.
But we don't have enough good volunteers. Are you a good volunteer? If you aren't
TASKFORCE and want to be, call the
OF GREATER CLEVELAND
Here are their responses: "A good volunteer is one that does what they say they'll do, when they said they'd do it."
"A good volunteer often doesn't need to be asked, he or she knows instinctively what needs to be done and just does it. Often without anybody knowing about it." "A good volunteer doesn't worry about what's in it for them."
Taskforce's volunteer director, Toni Tell.
Toni is an expert at preparing people to become good volunteers. She can't make you one, that must come from within side of you. But she can give you the tools that lead to becoming a point of light in someone else's life.
Even if you don't volunteer at the AIDS Taskforce, you owe it to yourself to be a good volunteer anyway. ♡
Tim Homan is development director of the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland.
